Footnotes I wrote this in 2014, the day after the event. I was still heartbroken. This was not the first female circumcision ceremony I had been to, but it was the last. Since then we have campaigned hard in the local community and I am pleased to say that the practice is declining. It has not been eradicated however, and horrifyingly some parents are now circumcising their daughters as young as 6 months, in order to avoid the increasing scrutiny of anti FGM campaigners and the law.
